We searched months for the male puppy with the type and ancestry we wanted. Thanks to Katia and Davi Tarraga of Hillsborough Bullmastiffs, Nyx came to us at 14 weeks. A week later he was camping with us on an island in a western North Carolina lake.
Nyx won "Best Puppy" at his first dog show and we were told to come back in the afternoon for "Puppy Working Group" (compete against the best puppy winners from the 19 breeds in the Working Group). Nyx won "Group 1" (best puppy in the working group) at his very first show. It was our second show and we did not know we were supposed to stay for "Best Puppy in Show" . In the next month and a half Nyx won "Best Puppy" twice and placed in "Puppy Working Group" both times.

We thought it important to Nyx's health to keep him lean as a puppy. He accumulated points while Bill was learning to show dogs. We let a handler show him for a week in the summer of 2005 and he won two majors and another show to finish his championship at 13 months! Nyx has only shown a few times as a Champion and won "best of breed" several times.
Nyx entered The 2005 American Bullmastiff Association's National Specialty as a 16 month old puppy and made the first cut in the "Best of Breed" ring along with only two or three other brindles.
Nyx's breeder, Davi Tarraga, took Nyx's picture outside the ring at 2005 Nationals as Nyx waited for his turn in the ring, and it was chosen for the July page of the 2006 All Breed Pedigree calendar in Brazil, South America.
The line Nyx comes from is slow maturing. His breeder said he will not be mature till he is 30-36 months old. She was right. The picture at the top of this page was taken a year after the Nationals picture above. Nyx put on 20 pounds of muscle in that year and continues to change. We are anxious to see how he will mature.

We were looking for a "Show Quality" dog when we found Nyx, but were most interested in finding a companion pet to fill the hole left by the passing of our last Great Dane. Nyx is totally devoted to Bill and he is tremendously affectionate with his family. He is a great guard and very controlled in his reponse. See Nyx stories:
We reached our goal of attaining Nyx's Championship quickly and fairly easily. We plan on showing Nyx some at Specialties. At the 2006 Southeast Bullmastiff Association Specialty with the record 123 entries, Nyx won "Best Brindle" and a beautiful original oil painting By Adele Pfenninger.
Nyx will be eligeble to show in Veterans class from now on (6 and up). He looks as good as ever and he carries himself with confidence and a maturity he has gained in the last couple years.
He is still looking ready to show at about 6 years.
Meanwhile, Nyx will be playing with the "girls" and enjoying life on the farm.

Nyx is producing puppies with beautiful very large heads, Big Eyes, Short backs, DEEP wide chests, heavy bone and muscle and many at the top of the standard.
